It is located 22km to the north of Caraz City, in the Áncash region. The canyon is an impressive geological formation in the northern mountains of Peru, between the Cordillera Negra (Black Range) and the Cordillera Blanca (White Range), with a depth of 2,000 metres and 500 metres long. The rushing Santa River runs through the canyon.
The waterfalls in the canyon were taken advantage of in the building of the Cañón del Pato hydro-electric power station, in Huallanca, a facility that provides electricity to the Cajamarca, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Áncash regions.
The canyon can be accessed via Molinopampa - Huallanca with its attractive 35 tunnels. Mountain biking is frequently practised in the area.
