Considered a paradise of biodiversity due to its exceptional climate, the department of Madre de Dios is the perfect place for eco-tourism and observing flora and fauna. For this reason, the Tambopata National Reserve was chosen by PROMPERÚ as a site for the 6th “Big Day” Birding Competition.
Last June 5th, the six winners of the online game, along with birdwatching experts, competed in the "Big Day" as part of two teams. Their job was to tally as many birds as possible in 24 hours. To do so, they went deep into the Tambopata national reserve to discover its natural wonders. Madre de Dios is an excellent birding destination since birds stop over at its habitats as part of their migration routes.
The winner of the event was the "Chichiriches” team, which reported a total of 174 bird species. The group included Solange Campos, Rodolfo Bustos and Carola Sánchez, who were led by expert Fernando Angulo. They were also accompanied by a specialist from the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP), a local guide and a search and rescue paramedic, who made sure that all participants were safe.
