Located 22 km to the north of the city of Caraz, in the Áncash department between the Cordillera Negra (Black Range) and the Cordillera Blanca (White Range).
The canyon is an impressive geological formation in the northern mountains of Peru, 500 metres long and with a depth of 2,000 metres. The fast-flowing Santa (Saintly) river runs through the canyon.
The waterfall in the canyon is used as a source of energy though the Cañón del Pato hydro-electric power station, in Huallanca, a facility that provides electricity to the Cajamarca, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Áncash departments.
The canyon can be reached via the Molinopampa — Huallanca road with its 35 attractive tunnels. Mountain biking is popular in the area.
