The large variety of flora in the Amazonas department allows colourful and beautiful butterflies to fully develop and inhabit large areas of the high jungle and part of the low jungle.
Along the various tourist trails, visitors can see beautiful butterfly species, particularly on the trails to Kuélap, Condor Lagoon and, above all, Gocta Waterfalls. A butterfly farm has yet to be established, so you always have to keep your eyes open for different species.
In the Molinopampa district, located in the Rodríguez de Mendoza province and just a few hours from Chachapoyas, the orchid zone is populated by thousands of multi-coloured butterflies.
Further away, the Santiago-Comaina Reserved Zone (ZRSC), in Condorcanqui province, is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, with endemic species and up to 474 varieties of butterfly, of which 21 could be new to science.
