Junín and Pasco
The jungle brow region in the Junín and Pasco departments, in central Peru, is home to a large variety of butterflies with incredible colours that contrast with the green foliage of the jungle.
The Experimental Butterfly Centre and Wild Animal Shelter can be found in La Merced, a city located in the Chanchamayo Valley. Visitors have access to all the facilities needed for easy interaction with the colourful species while learning about their life cycle. The butterfly centre promotes environmental conservation through educational activities and communication programmes, and generates employment for residents from the most economically vulnerable sectors.
In the San Matías-San Carlos Protection Forest (BPSMSC), in the same region, 500 species of butterfly have been identified. The entire area has huge potential for future exploration.
