Madre de Dios is one of the departments that contains the widest variety of flora and fauna. More than 1,300 species of butterfly exist in the area, and fly freely around the Tambopata National Reserve and Manu National Park. Travelling to both sites requires the services of specialist agencies that offer trips of between 5 and 8 days.
In the city of Puerto Maldonado, very close to the airport, is the Butterfly House, a large garden that enables visitors to observe these delicate multicoloured animals in their natural habitat and witness different stages of their formation and growth. The butterflies are raised in a laboratory, where hundreds of larvae from different species are cared for with patience and dedication. Visitors have access to huge amounts of information and can enjoy the relaxing environment, which includes a cafe and souvenir shop.
