This slender bird, with a long neck and tail, has black and white plumage. It was believed for a century that this unusual species, which is the size of a large hen, was extinct, until a small colony was found in Lambayeque in 1977. This lovely creature currently lives in the Laquipampa Wildlife Refuge where it feeds on fruits and plants such as the carob.
It can be spotted in the Lajas sector, the Negrahuasi ravine, the El Reloj sector and the lower part of Shambo ravine.
