The World Travel Awards (WTA) recognize and celebrate excellence in the tourism and travel industry worldwide. Nominations are made on the basis of well-supported recommendations made by professionals in the tourism industry. All winners are chosen through an online vote.
Peru is no stranger to these awards, and as every year surpasses the last in terms of tourist attractions, it therefore obtains a strong position in many categories. An example is its distinction of the highest honor for being the best culinary destination in South America, an award which has made all Peruvians proud.
In 2012, Peru beat countries such as Chile, Brazil and Argentina in the category of best culinary destination in South America. This was because Peruvian cuisine was slowly gaining a following around the world, and also because the same Peruvians who made this award possible have been working hard on a daily basis with great zeal and effort.
In July 2013, Peru repeated the feat when it won the award for best culinary destination in South America, imbuing Peruvians with great pride in their heritage. It was also made clear that the accomplishment was achieved by all, especially by the great team that forms our cuisine’s chain of flavor, those who know what people like, and serve them with all the love and dedication they have to offer.
2014 was no exception; our country once again received the important distinction of being the best culinary destination in the region. The gala was held in the neighboring country of Ecuador, which witnessed an important night for Peruvian gastronomy and tourism, as this category also helped establish Peru as the best cultural destination in South America.
These accolades cemented Peru’s position as the regional leader in culinary arts, and put Peru in the spotlight at the highest international level, giving it greater confidence to consolidate tourism as the second largest source of income thanks to every effort made to attract as many visitors to the country as possible.
