The Birding Rally Challenge is the only competition of its kind in the world. It brings together the best known birdwatchers on the planet, who work in teams to try to see and hear the largest number of bird species on a set route.
The second event of its kind, the Birding Rally Challenge Peru, Northern Amazon 2013, took place in the departments of Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Amazonas and San Martín from 11 to 19 June 2013. There were 24 competitors from the following countries: (2) the United States, (1) the United Kingdom, (1) South Africa, (1) Brazil, (1) Spain and 3 invited guests from the United States, Canada and Belorussia.
After 8 days of tough competition, and more than 1,500 km traveled, a total of 864 bird species had been observed (approximately 10% of all the bird species in the world), of which 34 were endemic. This represents almost 30% of all the endemic species of Peru.
The team from LSU Tigrisomas from the United States were once again the winners, having recorded 636 species. They were followed by the Forest Falcons from the United Kingdom with 601 species, Zululanders from South Africa with 570 species, Artarajubas from Brazil with 510 species, Ebirders, from the United States with 495 species and finally Tramuntana from Spain with 482 species.
