Puno
An important lake in Andean mythology, from which, according to legend, Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo, children of the Sun god and founders of the Inca Empire, emerged. Peru and Bolivia share sovereignty over this navigable lake, which is the highest in the world at 3,810 masl. It has an area of 8,559 km2 and has a maximum depth of 283 metres. The annual average temperature of its waters varies, from between 9°C and 15°C from October to May, and from -14°C to -2°C, June to September. The lake works as a temperature regulator for the area regulator for the area; if it did not exist, the chance of any type of life would be nil. The Peruvian side has various islands, including Amantaní, Taquile, Tikonata, Suasi, Soto and Anapia (natural islands) and the floating areas created by the Uros (artificial islands). On the lake shore grow totora reeds, which harbor a variety of birds and also fish such as carachis, mauris, and suche lake catfish (in danger of extinction), all of which are native species prized for their nutritional value, as well as trout and silverside, which are non-native species.

It is around 5.72 km2 in size, and the altitude between the port and town varies from 3,810 to 3,950 masl. The maximum temperature is 23°C and the minimum is 7°C. On the island, remains from pre-Inca periods can be found, and can be particularly well observed on the higher parts of the island . During the colonial era and until the beginning of the 20th century, the site was used as a political prison, but from 1970 it became the exclusive property of the Taquileans.
