“Cactus canastero”
|
This small bird of around 14 centimetres long is endemic to Peru and found on the most arid mountainsides of Lima and Arequipa. The cactus canastero is reddish-brown with an orange throat and cream-coloured breast and has a long tail and a thin beak. This species, as its name suggests, forms its nests in cactus plants to survive. This bird can currently be spotted in the Lachay National Reserve.
It can be seen all year round in the driest areas nesting in columnar cacti (look out for its nest – a little basket made from dry twigs), for example around Guayabito ravine.
