Butterfly Spotting
Iquitos

The Pilpintuwasi butterfly house is very near Iquitos, where visitors can see a wide variety of butterfly species. It is home to exotic species, with a beautiful jungle habitat and tropical flowers, where their natural life cycle can also be appreciated.
The road to the butterfly hosue begins at Bellavista-Nanay port and market, from where visitors take a water bus, known as a "peque-peque", to Padrecocha, 20 minutes away. From Padrecocha it is a 15-minute walk to the nursery. Pilpintuwasi is also a wildlife rescue centre for animals such as giant anteaters, land or "motelo" tortoises (Geochelone denticulata) and sloths.
In Iquitos there is also a private initiative called Butterfly Wasi, devoted to breeding 6 different species of butterfly, with almost 4,000 specimens of each. This project is the first commercial nursery supplying collectors looking for exotic specimens, such as the "Morpho menelaus occidentalis", with a market price of US$ 30.
