Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan
“Andígena hypoglauca”
These birds inhabit the Andean forests of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru at an altitude of between 2400 and 3400 metres. The grey-breasted mountain toucan measures around 46 cm long, has a beak of between 8.9 and 10.2 cm, and black and yellow colouring. It also has a black crest and nape and a turquoise ring around the eyes; its wings and back are an olive-brown colour with a yellow rump. These birds seek their food in pairs and are frugivorous; in other words, they eat fruit and occasionally small vertebrates.
They are usually spotted in the higher part of trees in mountainous woods, either alone or in small groups, feeding on fruit along the whole length of the road that descends from Acjanaco to San Pedro.
