The Lima Art Museum, also known as MALI, is one of the main art venues in Peru and is located in the historic Palace of the Exhibition, built expressly for exhibition purposes and an example of beautiful Lima eclectic architecture. It was constructed as the facility for Peru's first major public exhibition, held as part of the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of its independence.
It has a total area of 4500 m², consisting of permanent and temporary exhibition halls that house impressive collections. The spaces that make up the permanent exhibition include pre-Columbian art, textiles, colonial art, silverware, republican art, genre art, 20th-century art, photography, and contemporary art. This display features more than 1200 pieces from a collection of over 17 000 works that narrate 3000 years of Peruvian art history.
Additionally, this facility also offers courses of visual arts, body expression, guitar, aerobics, and dance for children and adults. It also provides film library services and a cafeteria.

In 1954, a small group of 25 entrepreneurs and intellectuals formed an association called the Arts Patronage with the aim of promoting culture and art in Peru. Their main objective was the establishment of an art museum in the country.
In response to this proposal, the Municipality of Lima granted this patronage the old Palacio de la Exposición. The restoration phase of the building took several years until the Lima Art Museum was officially inaugurated on March 10, 1961.
Since then, this facility has been dedicated to the preservation, research, exhibition, and promotion of Peruvian art.
