At the north of Puno, is the town of Pucará, which is recognized for its pottery. The most representative symbol of this area is the Torito de Pucará, which are hung in pairs above the entrances of the houses as a symbol of protection and prosperity. That is why, Pucará is also known as "Tierra del Torito" (Land of the Torito).
This place was also the scene where the Pucará Culture was developed, characterized by its great pyramidal constructions, forming a great pre-Hispanic city. Its civilization stood out for its architectural and hydraulic engineering knowledge.
Among the attractions you can visit is the Lítico Museum, a space where you can see stone sculptures. You also should see the Kalasaya Archaeological Complex, the Pucará Ceramic Museum and its video room where the mythical side of the Torito de Pucará and its social use are explained; the Santa Isabel Church, the Plaza del Torito, where it is appreciated a large format sculptures of the evolution of the bull; do not forget to visit the artisan ceramic workshops where you will learn about the process of transforming clay into works of art and make your own piece. - Pucará is located 104 kilometers north of the city of Puno and 60 kilometers from Juliaca.
- It is located on the edge of the road to Cusco, with an altitude of 3,860 meters above sea level.
- To get from the city of Puno you can go by car, the journey takes around 2 hours.
- From July 14-16, the Virgen del Carmen Festival and Craft Fair are held. In this festivity -the oldest in Puno-, you can see the exchange of products (also known as barter).
