Situated on the high plateau, teeming with a wide variety of wildlife and within a vast area where you can breathe pure air, the Manu Biosphere Reserve was chosen as the location for the Big Day.
We share a summary of the highlights of the 2013 Big Day Manu:
Irwing Saldaña, Luis Vallejos and Karen Hostia were the winning participants on the “Conoce Perú” Facebook page. They blazed through the trivia questions about birding, and as winners embarked on this great adventure in the Manu Reserve.
The group of budding naturalists was accompanied by birders such as Fernando Angulo and Barry Walker, and the experienced guide Dennis Osorio. The event began at 3 am and ended around 8 pm the next day, breaking the record on the first day and finishing with a total of 186 recorded species, thus setting the first official birdwatching benchmark in Manu National Park.
Many young people took part in this competition launched by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and the Peru Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PROMPERÚ), with 2600 participants from all regions of the country.
