Paddington, one of the most beloved characters on the planet, has just released his most recent film: “Paddington in Peru” in the United Kingdom. This journey takes the intrepid character to learn more about his origins in the majestic South American country, from the richness of the Peruvian Amazon, the impressive Historic Center of Lima and the Historical Sanctuary of Machupicchu, in Cusco, one of the new wonders of the world.
Upon arrival in Machupicchu, the popular bespectacled bear fulfills the dream of knowing its origins, while going in search of ‘Aunt Lucy’. On this trip, full of nostalgia and tenderness, Paddington invites spectators to the heart of Inca culture in this destination that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Peru’s traditions and ancestral heritage stand out.
To learn more about the sanctuary located in the Cusco region, here are some little-known facts, but highlighting all the splendor of the Inca citadel:
1. An earthquake-resistant fortress in the heights
Machupicchu is located more than 2453 m above sea level, on a geological fault that was chosen in detail by the Incas. Why? This civilization so precisely carved the structures of the sanctuary that, in the face of an earthquake, the foundations would not be harmed. It is for this reason that the historic shrine has withstood different earthquakes throughout its history, since the 15th century. The shape of each stone is not a mere ornamental detail, but a demonstration of the ingenuity of this culture.
2. Monumental architecture
There are over 150 structures that make up this place, including ancient temples, terraces, noble and common residences, water channels, and other constructions whose building methods remain a great mystery. Several of these buildings can be seen on the different tours of the sacred territory.

3. Underground channel
How did they get water to Machupicchu? They developed high knowledge in hydraulics to build an irrigation canal of more than 700 meters, with about 16 fountains, which allowed to distribute the water among its residents. Thus, in the face of heavy rains and climate change, and remembering the strategic location of the sanctuary, the Incas managed to use the natural faults to their advantage. Most impressive of all, this system is still in operation.
4. Astronomical calendar
In the sanctuary is the enigmatic sculpture of the Intiwatana, which was placed in a strategic environment to know the different seasons of the sun. An astronomical calendar! This civilization used to perform different rituals according to the seasons that were reflected through the mysterious stone, used by the curacas during the heyday of Tahuantinsuyo.

5. Movie star
Machpicchu was also the location of films such as “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, “The Motorcycle Diaries”, “Secret of the Incas”, “Aguirre, the Wrath of God”, “Max Is Missing” and more. The wonder of the modern world amazes film directors for its breathtaking landscape, incomparable view, prestige and millennial history.
The capital of the Tahuantinsuyo empire welcomes Paddington on a unique journey of emotions and traditions. Travel and discover more awesome facts about Machupicchu!
