Peru is once again in the spotlight of the world by being included in the Travel Green List™ 2025, a recognition that highlights the best sustainable tourism experiences worldwide. This achievement was made possible thanks to the cultural experiences offered by the local communities of the Uros Floating Islands.
Located in the majestic Lake Titicaca, these islands stand out for their unique ancestral engineering, as they were entirely handmade with totora reeds. This ancient technique has been passed down through generations, and the most unique of its highlights is that it is found nowhere else on the planet!
Additionally, the support of the national government has been crucial in promoting community-based tourism on the islands, creating a real and sustainable positive impact that attracts tourists from all over the world.
Why did the Uros Floating Islands stand out?
The Travel Green List, launched in 2023, is a unique annual guide that highlights the best of sustainable tourism worldwide. For the 2025 edition, hundreds of applications were submitted and meticulously evaluated by an expert jury. Therefore, Peru's inclusion through the Uros Floating Islands represents a clear testament to the value and quality of its sustainable initiatives.
The Uros Floating Islands present an incredible model of sustainability: they use natural and renewable materials, maintain traditional fishing and hunting practices, and their tourism has a low environmental impact with high cultural interaction.

The Uros people also provide authentic experiential tourism programs, as visitors can engage in daily activities with local families, sail on totora reed rafts, and sleep in accommodations built by the community members themselves.
In addition, the islands are strategically located to appreciate the grandeur of Lake Titicaca and boast a beautiful, living culture where their people reveal their admirable vision of the world, their great resilience and their proud identity.
The Uros are much more than a tourist destination: they are a living testament to creativity and a deep connection with nature. Visiting their islands is an opportunity to experience an ancestral way of life that has adapted to the present without losing its essence!
