A historic night for Peruvian gastronomy!
The restaurant Maido, by chef Mitsuharu “Micha” Tsumura, has been named the best restaurant in the world in the prestigious The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list, with the award ceremony held in Turin, Italy.
This accolade places Maido at the pinnacle of international cuisine and reaffirms Peruvian gastronomy as a global benchmark. The ceremony brought together the world’s most influential chefs and restaurants, and it was there that Maido, with its Nikkei cuisine — a creative fusion of Japanese techniques and Peruvian ingredients — conquered palates and critics worldwide.
The prestigious 2025 list also includes four Peruvian restaurants in the world’s top 50:
- Maido (No. 1) – Lima
- Kjolle (No. 9) – Lima
- Mérito (No. 26) – Lima
- Mayta (No. 39) – Lima
Additionally, Mil, the restaurant by chef Virgilio Martínez in Cusco, was also recognized at No. 75.
These awards reflect the culinary richness of Peru, driven by ancestral knowledge, millennia-old ingredients such as quinoa, native potatoes, and chili peppers, and a culinary identity that values local roots while constantly innovating. At Maido, every dish is an experience that combines technique, history, and emotion — a deep narrative of Peruvian culture through taste.
Restaurants from Peru for the world.
This is not the first time Peru has amazed the global culinary scene. In 2023, Central, led by Virgilio Martínez and Pía León, was recognized as the best restaurant in the world, cementing Peru’s position as an epicenter of global cuisine.
Maido had already been recognized multiple times as the best restaurant in Latin America in various editions of the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking. Now, it leaps to the global No. 1 spot, standing out for its iconic dishes such as nigiri a lo pobre, sudado nikkei, and bold reinterpretations of classic Peruvian dishes like lomo saltado and arroz con pato.
These recognitions confirm Peru’s role as the culinary capital of Latin America and as one of the most attractive gastronomic destinations in the world. Lima, in particular, continues to be a creative epicenter for chefs who reinterpret tradition with a contemporary vision.
