Executive Chef Carlos Pardo Figueroa Thornberry and Resident Chef Ribelino Alegría of Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel will be among the international culinary stars from hotels around the world participating in the 33rd Annual Chefs’ Tribute to Citymeals on Wheels. Dubbed The Grand Affair: Celebrating Chefs of the World’s Great Hotels, the gala charity event will be held at famed Rockefeller Center in New York on Monday, June 11.
More than 1,000 guests will enjoy the signature culinary creations prepared by heralded chefs from many countries, while fine wines and artisanal cocktails will be poured by leading sommeliers and mixologists.
One-hundred percent of ticket sales and donations will support Citymeals – the only nonprofit organization providing home-delivered meals to frail, aged New Yorkers in all five of the city’s boroughs. The annual event honors Citymeals’ co-founder James Beard, and last year raised more than $840,000 to provide 112,000 home-delivered meals.
“Being invited to participate in the Citymeals Chefs’ Tribute in New York is a recognition of the great strides we’ve made at our Qunuq Restaurant where we are creating some of the most exciting cuisine in Peru,” said Anibal Clavijo, Managing Director of Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel. “With the Peruvian kitchen being celebrated around the world today, it is culinary artists and innovators like our chefs who are taking Peruvian food to new heights.”
At Qunuq, the culinary team fuses Peru’s Andean and international roots with the latest culinary techniques and innovative touches. For the Citymeals event in New York, chefs Pardo Figueroa and Ribelino Alegría will be reinventing a popular international dish with Andean ingredients and flavors: a Quinoa Tabbouleh.
In the kitchen at Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel, chefs Figueroa and Alegría prepare dishes with the highestquality native ingredients that are sustainably produced and locally sourced. Recognizing its social responsibility as a tourism venue at one of the world’s most visited destinations, Sumaq supports community farmers and has developed strong, mutually beneficial relationships with many local suppliers.
At the foot of the world-renowned archaeological site, Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel is perfectly poised, with 62 luxury suites offering views of the Vilcanota River and surrounded by majestic mountains.
Sumaq immerses visitors in Peruvian culture with replicas of art from ancient civilizations; traditional Andean ceremonies; spa treatments using local herbs and essential oils; and guided tours to areas less visited.
Qunuq restaurant uses ingredients sourced locally from the surrounding 50km to create world-class cuisine, as well as assist in the sustainable development of high-mountain communities. The property has received Rainforest Alliance certification, has been recognized by Condé Nast Traveler in its Readers’ Choice awards, and is a Virtuoso luxury hotel.
