As part of the 2nd World Forum on Food Tourism, the first World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) prototype in Peru was launched. The prototype is called the Quinoa Route and centers on this iconic product from Peru.

“Basically, a UNWTO prototype is a live project which aims to research and analyze a tourist destination. We want to use this prototype as a practical exercise in innovation and learning to establish models that can be replicated at different destinations in our country and around the world,” explained Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism.

The project is based on a UNWTO prototype model which takes an innovative approach to the tourism sector. This method will be applied to the Quinoa Route in five stages: Discovery; Technical design; Preparing a Business Plan; Implementation and Improvement and Oversight processes.

The agreement was signed by MINCETUR representatives and the Executive Secretary of Member Relations at UNWTO, Carlos Vogeler.

Quinoa

Quinoa is an emblematic product: there are more than 3000 quinoa ecotypes in Peru. Until now, only five color varieties have been promoted, aside from white quinoa. Peru has technical regulations governing quinoa farming. Many women participate in the quinoa farming process and receive a fair and just salary. The entire process is completely organic.
