The 2017 list of the world’s best museums was published by TripAdvisor, the most important travel advice website. The Larco Museum was honored with the 22nd spot on this prestigious ranking of the top 25. This major distinction was given by TripAdvisor, a social media site boasting the highest number of users and the best algorithm for processing the millions of reviews published by its community.
TripAdvisor users review and rate the museums, hotels, restaurants and attractions of every country and destination in the world. 96% of visitors to the Larco Museum rated their experience as “excellent” or “very good.” Thanks to this community, the cultural repository tops the list of “things to do in Lima” and is Peru’s second most popular tourist attraction after Machu Picchu.
Andrés Álvarez Calderón, director of the Larco Museum, said: “...The Larco Museum is a great little museum with a staff that is very attentive to the quality of visitors’ experiences. Perhaps this area is what set us apart and won us a spot on this distinguished list. In this day and age, any successful museum understands that its two greatest assets are its collection and its visitors. When I reflect on the list of the world's 25 best museums, I think this is probably their great common denominator.”
On TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s best tourist attractions, Machu Picchu has always appeared in the top 10. Peru also has a strong showing on “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list, with three establishments. Now for the first time, a Peruvian museum has cracked the list of the world’s top 25 museums.
About the Larco Museum
The Larco Museum was founded in 1926 by pioneer of Peruvian archeology Rafael Larco Hoyle at Hacienda Chiclín in Trujillo. Since the 50s it has been housed in an 18th-century viceregal mansion in the Pueblo Libre District of Lima. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, its permanent exhibition entices visitors to discover more than 5000 years of Peru’s ancient history through a fascinating trove of Pre-Columbian art. The museum is famed for its collection of erotic art and its vaults that are open to the public, where museum-goers can explore around 50,000 classified artifacts. Few other museums in the world offer this kind of access. Its masterpieces have been displayed at the most prestigious museums and are considered world-class icons of Pre-Columbian art.
