Peru received 37 nominations for the 2016 South American World Travel Awards, highlighting PROMPERU's effort to become the region's Leading Tourism Board.
The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) said that since 1993 the WTA have become an extraordinary gauge of excellence in the travel and tourism industry at the international level. Winners are chosen by a public online vote and by votes cast by tourism industry experts around the globe.
"Lima and Peru are regular attendees at the WTA galas. But this time the event organizers surprised us, because the number of categories in which we are nominated jumped from 7 in 2015 to 37 this year, which is a clear sign that the different players involved at all levels of tourism in Peru are on the right track," she said.
This year, Peru competes with other countries in the region in important categories like Leading Adventure Destination, Leading Culinary Destination, Leading Cultural Destination and Leading Green Destination. Lima is also in the running for Leading Destination, Leading Business Destination, Leading City Break Destination, and Leading Meetings & Conferences Destination.
"These nominations help position us as leaders in the tourism industry, and help solidify our status as a regional tourist destination. PROMPERU's nomination is an important recognition of the enormous effort we have made at the central government to make tourism the driver of development and social inclusion", she said.
Private sector organizations were also nominated in various categories. For example, Jorge Chávez International Airport is in the running for best airport in South America. ATSA is nominated in the Leading Charter Airline category.
In the hotel industry, Casa Andina and Las Casitas del Colca are competing in the Boutique Hotel category; Belmond Miraflores Park, Hilton Marriot, Meliá and others are nominated in the Business Hotels category. In addition, Adventure Life, Andean Treks, Condor Travel, CTM Tours, InkaNatura Travel, and Kuoda Travel Private Tours are in the running in the Travel Agency and Tour Operators category.
Voting closes on May 6, so everyone is invited to participate and support our nominees. The Latin America World Travel Awards gala will be held in Lima next July 1 at the Swissotel. The final ceremony will be at the end of the year in the Maldives.
