An impressive tourist destination located approximately 100 kilometers south of the city of Cusco, near the town of Checacupe, in the province of Canchis, at an altitude of 4900 meters above sea level.
Its main attraction is the three mountains that show an impressive range of colors due to the presence of several minerals, such as iron oxides and clays, which tint the rock with shades of red, green, yellow, purple, and other colors. The landscape is truly spectacular and offers a unique experience for visitors. Additionally, it provides a spectacular view of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.
The colorful Palccoyo mountains are very similar to the imposing Seven Colors Mountain of Vinicunca. However, they offer a less challenging alternative, with a summit reachable in just 45 minutes and requiring minimal physical exertion. This makes it an ideal choice for individuals of any age or fitness level.
In addition to the colors, the Palccoyo mountains have interesting and diverse geological formations, such as strata, ridges, peaks, and valleys. Natural erosion over thousands of years has carved the land and created these impressive forms that complement the beauty of the place.
Considerations to take into account
● The best time to visit the Palccoyo mountains is between April and December, the dry season. During these months, the weather is much more pleasant and sunny compared to the rainy season, which occurs between January and March.
● Getting to the colorful Palccoyo mountains is relatively easy. The hike is shorter and less physically demanding than other similar routes. The path has no steep slopes and has few uneven sections. However, it is necessary to acclimatize to the altitude for at least two days before the excursion.
● Mornings are cold, but as the hours pass, the weather becomes warmer, so it is important to wear light and warm clothing, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof jacket, water, sunscreen, and gloves for the cold.
