The prestigious U.S. newspaper The New York Times has included Ollantaytambo, an archaeological gem in Cusco's Sacred Valley, in its annual list of the “52 Places to Go” in 2025. This recognition not only celebrates the monumental beauty of this Inka city but also its ability to combine history, culture, nature and gastronomy, elements that make it a unique destination in the world.
A living Inka city
Ollantaytambo is the only city in Peru that preserves the urban organization of the Inka period. Its cobblestone streets, water canals and imposing agricultural terraces offer an immersive experience in the architecture and legacy of the Tahuantinsuyo.
The Tahuantinsuyo was the great empire of the Inkas, which covered what are now the territories of Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Argentina, and places like Ollantaytambo still preserve much of its legacy.
This strategic center, built as a military, religious and agricultural center, is known as the “Living Inka City” because of the harmonious integration of its historical past with modern life. Its imposing stone design reflects the sophistication and ingenuity of Inka engineering.

The town's restaurants and cafes delight visitors with dishes that highlight native products, such as quinoa, corn and Cape gooseberry, in an environment where modernity respects cultural roots. In addition to this culinary richness, there are colorful markets where local artisans exhibit textiles, jewelry and souvenirs, reflecting the cultural identity of the Sacred Valley.
