On top! For the third time, Peru has been recognized as the country with the most birds recorded in a single day. This is part of Global Big Day (GBD) 2021, the largest and most important international bird watching event.
On May 8, the South American country managed to record 1,351 species. Cusco was the region with the most bird sightings (669), followed by Madre de Dios (477), San Martín (456) and Loreto (405). In addition, more than 2,000 sites of interest for bird watching were identified.
Great recognition
According to Mariamercedes Antezana, ornithology analyst of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML), the fact that Peru has achieved first place in the context of a pandemic that has isolated so many people around the world should be considered a great achievement.
"(This recognition) reflects both the great diversity of birds that Peru is home to and the joint work of all the people who have been able to participate in this great initiative, from their homes with their families, or venturing a little further away while always respecting the established biosafety measures," said Antezana.
For its part, the Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity (CORBIDI) reported that although the COVID-19 health emergency has affected the promotion of this event, it congratulated everyone who still managed to participate while following all the necessary protocols.
This first place not only establishes Peru as one of the best destinations in the world for birdwatching, but also informs the population about the country's natural wealth and encourages their commitment to its conservation.
What is Global Big Day?
It is a global citizen science initiative. It was first held in 2015 and emerged with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of bird conservation and the risks that these animals face, encouraging its dissemination through digital platforms.
Global Big Day is organized by the Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University, USA, who manage the ornithological data portal eBird.
Did you know?
- The Peruvian region with the highest citizen participation in this event was Lima, with 350 bird lists submitted.
- Second and third places went to Colombia and Ecuador, with 1190 and 1114 bird species recorded, respectively.
- Peru also obtained this recognition in 2015 and 2016. The first year, 1177 bird species were observed, and the following year, 1226 species.
