Anniversary of Manu National Park

On May 29, 1973, Manu National Park was declared the first protected natural area of the Peruvian Amazon. Since 1987, it has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition is due to its immense contribution to the research and preservation of endemic species of flora and fauna found exclusively within its territory. Additionally, it serves as a safeguard for cultural diversity and the self-determination of indigenous peoples native to the area.

Manu National Park is located in the provinces of Paucartambo in Cusco and Manu in Madre de Dios, covering an area of 1 716 295.22 hectares. It is managed by the National System of Protected Natural Areas (SINANPE) and the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP). These entities have the purpose of safeguarding biological mega-diversity, as well as the landscapes of lowland forest, cloud forest, and the Andes (it reaches altitudes exceeding 4000 meters above sea level) in southeastern Peru.

How is the anniversary of Manu National Park celebrated? While ecotourism is promoted in the area, celebrations are not organized specifically to attract more visitors. However, a commemorative event is held by the Department of Environment. The Minister of Environment, accompanied by representatives from SINANPE and SERNANP, participate in a commemorative act held at the Main Square of Challabamba district, located in the province of Paucartambo, Cusco.

On some occasions, the location of the authorities' gathering may vary. However, a small toast is usually made in honor of this natural wonder, attended by locals and visitors who learn about the scientific, biological, cultural, and administrative advancements aimed at promoting the responsible use of the State's resources.
