Anniversary of the Amazon River as a Natural Wonder
The Amazon River, the largest river in the world by volume, spans a length of 6800 kilometers. Its flow is even greater than the combined total of the top ten rivers, representing –approximately– one fifth of all the rivers in the world. Additionally, it is the longest and most voluminous river on Earth having the largest basin on the planet (approximately 7.4 million square kilometers).
These are some of the most significant facts that led the Amazon River to be designated as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world in 2012 by the New 7 Wonders foundation, where more than 450 locations from different countries participated. This distinction is celebrated specifically in the Peruvian city of Iquitos.
Every August 13th, another anniversary of the Amazon River as a Natural Wonder of the World is commemorated with a series of activities aimed at promoting tourism and attracting visitors from both Peru and abroad. Generally, the regional government organizes and hosts these activities. For this special occasion, some arrangements are prepared, and we specify them below.

The celebrations begin early with a ceremony attended by local authorities. Following a series of speeches, cultural presentations take place, transforming the formal atmosphere into a festive one. People share dance steps and start consuming local food at gastronomic fairs set up for the occasion.
Later, ferry rides on the Amazon River are organized to showcase the flow from a different perspective. Two types of water sports exhibitions are also play on the river: jet skiing and Olympic canoeing, using specific areas of the current to avoid disrupting the nature or the wildlife that inhabits it. Additionally, canoe competitions among citizens are held.
To conclude the celebrations, videos showcasing the region are projected, and a cultural show takes place, with the participation of local, national, and sometimes international artists.
Interesting fact
The Amazon River was discovered on February 12, 1542. Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana, accompanied by 53 indigenous individuals, led the expedition.
