Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inka Empire, is the cradle of archaeological treasures that are a faithful testament to the greatness and skill of this civilization. Origin of its peculiar shape
Waqrapukara possesses an additional mystery, as there is currently a debate about whether this historic site has the shape of a horn or a llama's ear. According to the Quechua language, "waqra" translates to horn, while "pukara" means fortress.
However, the local inhabitants, rich in ancestral knowledge, indicate that the fortress's shape is inspired by the upright ears of the llama when it is on alert. Thus, it is not uncommon to hear some refer to this place as "Llamapukara," highlighting the connection with these essential animals in Inka life.

Layout of the site
In its designation as Cultural Heritage of Peru, Waqrapukara reveals itself as an intriguing and multifaceted Inca architectural complex. This enigmatic site unfolds into two main groups, each telling a unique story of Inca greatness.
In the upper part, the first group features a detailed arrangement. Two subspaces, cleverly separated by a spacious central area with elaborate doorways, niches, and passageways. This architectural ensemble celebrates the skill of Inca builders, who merged aesthetics and utility.
Descending, the second group comprises eight strategically laid out terraces, adapting to the terrain's topography. These stepped terraces, with an average height of 1.80 meters and an impressive length of 153 meters, showcase the technical skill of the builders.
Both spaces suggest that, in addition to its military function, Waqrapukara could have also been a key setting for religious and spiritual ceremonies.
How to reach Waqrapukara from Cusco?
Despite its location atop a peak, there are various routes that bring you closer to this impressive fortress.
Currently, there are no public transportation options to reach the starting point of these hikes. Therefore, it is suggested to opt for a private vehicle or hire an authorized agency to make the experience more accessible.

One route starts in Cusco, with a journey aboard a private vehicle to the Sangarará district. Then, take the detour towards Punta Carretera, beginning an 8-kilometer hike to Waqrapukara. The ascent takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, while the descent takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes.
A less complicated route begins in Santa Lucía. From Cusco, it is necessary to take transportation to the Acomayo junction (buses and shared taxis to Sicuani). From there, continue by taxi or shared taxi to Pomacanchi. Once here, it is advisable to rent a vehicle, as public transportation availability is limited. The walk from Santa Lucía to Waqrapukara is approximately 4 km.
Another way to reach Waqrapukara is through the Acomayo - Pitumarca route. To reach the first destination, take a bus in the city of Cusco (departure times are every three hours, until five in the afternoon). Once at the destination, it is advisable to take a taxi or travel by private vehicle to Pitumarca, where the hike to the Inka fortress begins. The journey is approximately 7.5 km.
