The Alto Shilcayo natural viewpoint is located in the district of La Banda de Shilcayo, in the region of San Martin, just 1 km away from the city of Tarapoto. It is situated at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level and is part of the Escalera Mountain Range Regional Conservation Area.
The viewpoint is formed by a protruding rock from where you can see breathtaking mountains, lush trees, and the cities of La Banda de Shilcayo, Tarapoto, and Morales.
From this place, you can observe a natural landscape where diverse species are plentiful, for example:
Flora: bromeliads, heliconias, and orchids of different colors, sizes, and shapes; trees such as cashapona, tornillo, copal, shimbillo, cumala, moena, and renaco.
Fauna:mammals such as red deer, Peruvian jaguars, spectacled bears, and common woolly monkeys; amphibians such as colorful frogs; and butterflies like the blue morpho. The Shilcayo viewpoint is also one of the favorite destinations for birdwatchers. In its territory, you can find different endemic species such as the yellow-throated toucan, the long-whiskered owlet, the green macaw, and the Andean cock-of-the-rock.
Natural landscape: the Las Golondrinas waterfall, with a waterfall of almost 200 meters in height, and the Ahuashiyacu waterfall, which has two waterfalls, the first one of 60 meters high and the second one of 40 meters high.
How to get there?
To get to the Alto Shilcayo viewpoint, you need to take the hiking or trekking route, which has a 3-hour duration, approximately. This route is ideal for adventure lovers.
