The La Union waterfalls are located in the district of La Banda de Shilcayo, in the region of San Martin, just 5 km from the city of Tarapoto. They are named after a small village called La Union, which is located very close to them and whose inhabitants work in agricultural activities.
These picturesque waterfalls flow over two large rocks, forming a small waterfall that then falls onto a surface of natural stones, creating an extensive pool of warm water. The area does not have extensive vegetation but shares its territory with large rocks resulting in a truly magical and imposing appearance.
How to get there?
It is really easy to get to the waterfalls, you can do it by any type of land transportation. Although the road is not paved, it is in excellent condition so all types of vehicles can go through it.
The path is well signposted. Moreover, all the locals know where the waterfalls are and will be happy to guide visitors along their way.
What can you do there?
In the pool formed by the two waterfalls of La Union, visitors can take a refreshing dip, feel the strong but revitalizing waterfall on their shoulders, or just sit on the stones and admire the beautiful landscape.
Furthermore, the area surrounding the waterfalls is very close to the Escalera Mountain Range, making it a habitat for various species of flora and fauna.
In the adjacent area, there is a beautiful grassy esplanade, ideal for camping. Here, you can also observe the presence of huayruro, quina, manchinga, and ishpingo trees, among others.
The small village of La Unión
Visiting La Union waterfalls also provides an opportunity to explore the small village of the same name.
It is a picturesque town with beautiful streets filled with vegetation, friendly and warm inhabitants, pleasant weather, and, of course, a gastronomy that captivates everyone who tastes it.
An emblematic and traditional dish in the area is the juane: rice wrapped in bijao leaves (leaves from a regional palm tree) with a piece of chicken or hen in the center, with egg and olives, accompanied by green bananas and other spices.
