Each year, in February, the shores of Lake Titicaca are the setting for one of Peru’s most colorful and vibrant festivities.
The Virgin of Candelaria Festival is a remarkable fusion of colonial-era religious tradition, deeply-rooted customs, and veneration of the Virgin Mary. It is this celebration which has gained Puno its reputation as the folkloric capital of the Americas, and the “Diablada” is one of its most striking and representative dances. During the festivities, more than 40,000 dancers and 200 bands of musicians express to the maximum their devotion to the Virgin, through their wonderful costumes and the energy with which they continue to dance for two whole weeks.
