Spending a day in the city of Cusco can be more than productive for any traveler. From visiting the historic sites, the symbols of the town, strolling through its streets or entering the oldest market in the city, all these activities can be done in one day. You can opt for this short route in the town, before or after the tour of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Temple and Convent of Santo Domingo and Qoricancha
The construction of the church took place in 1633 and has a dome, a beautiful set of chairs for the choir carved in cedar, and walls adorned with Sevillian tiles. The museum shows the best of two cultures. Here harbor paintings, sculptures, religious ornaments, among others. In addition, this venue also hosts art exhibitions, talks, concerts, book presentations and theatrical performances.
Cathedral of Cusco
It was built between 1560 and 1664, in Quishuarcancha, the former palace of the Wiracocha Inca. With a Renaissance-style façade, here you will find one of the best expressions of colonial goldsmithing. It is located in the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) of Cusco, and is Cultural Heritage of the Nation in Peru.
Twelve Angled Stone
This Cultural Heritage of the Nation in Peru is considered one of the main attractions in the city, as it represents the Inca technology. It is located on calle Hatun Rumiyoq, and the visit is free of charge.
San Blas neighborhood
Also known as the "Neighborhood of the artisans", in this destination live several of the most famous artisans of Cusco. Here you will find different workshops for blacksmithing, shoemaking, tailoring, tinsmiths, among others.
Arch of Santa Clara
This arch was built at one of the vertexes of Plaza San Francisco, in the center of the city, and is a symbol of the Peruvian–Bolivian Confederation. Its construction took place in 1835 and was ordered by Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz.
San Pedro Market
It is the oldest food market in the city. It was part of a stretch of the Inca trail, which connected with what is now the Plaza de Armas. Here you can find all kinds of local supplies, as well as sweets, utensils, and gastronomic areas.
