The origin of the National Pisco Day dates back to May 6, 1999, when the National Institute of Culture (now, Department of Culture of Peru) declared the fourth Sunday of July as the official day to celebrate this emblematic grape distillate.

Since then, the date has become an opportunity to organize events, festivals, tastings, and activities related to this iconic beverage. In 1988, Pisco was recognized as a Cultural Heritage of Peru after conducting a study on its Peruvian roots, which dates back to the 16th century.

Variety and production areas of Pisco

This date is an opportunity to highlight the diversity of styles and varieties of Pisco that exist in the country, as it can be produced from different types of grapes, such as quebranta, negra criolla, mollar, italia, moscatel, albilla, torontel, and uvina. These varieties of grapes generate the following three types of Pisco: puro, mosto verde, and acholado, and each of them provides unique characteristics to Pisco, offering a wide range of flavor profiles and aromas.

Pisco is produced in the coastal regions of Lima, such as Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and the Valleys of Locumba, Sama and Caplina in the department of Tacna. The beverage is obtained through the fermentation and distillation of grapes, without the addition of other alcohols or sugars. Furthermore, it is characterized by its purity and authentic flavor, reflecting the qualities of the grapes used in its production.

It is important to mention that the most representative cocktails of the Peruvian gastronomy are made with Pisco, such as the Pisco Sour, Chilcano, Algarrobina cocktail, among others.
